Jose A Cancelas, MD, PhD
Dr. Cancelas is a physician-scientist with extensive expertise in transfusion medicine, cell therapies, hematology, and stem cell biology. He received his MD from Autonomous University of Madrid in 1990, followed by his residency in hematology and hematotherapy at Hospital Ramon y Cajal. He then pursued a fellowship at the University of Cincinnati's Hoxworth Blood Center in 2003. Dr. Cancelas joined Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 2001, where he held several leadership roles, including Director of the Hoxworth Blood Center and Leader of the Stem Cell Program at the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute. He also directed the Translational Core Laboratories. Dr. Cancelas is renowned for his research in hematopoiesis and has contributed significantly to collaborative studies in gene therapy and hemotherapies. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as Nature, Nature Medicine, Cancer Cell, and JCI. He is an Associate Editor for the journal Transfusion, Vice-President of the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), and President of the AABB Foundation. In 2024, he became the Executive Director of the Connell and O'Reilly Families Cell Manipulation Core at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, continuing his impactful work with well-established scientific collaborations at Boston Children’s Hospital.
