Jenna S

Background: My name is Jenna Shoman, and I am an undergraduate at Harvard College Class of 2028, concentrating in Human Evolutionary Biology. I am from Short Hills, New Jersey. My earliest research experience involved investigating the role of B7H3 in regulating adipocytic differentiation and metabolism in adipocytic cancer cells, with particular emphasis on its impact on tumor progression and metabolic function. I aspire to pursue a medical degree and build an academic career that integrates research and clinical practice. Joining the Sethi Lab offers an exceptional opportunity to deepen my academic skills, contribute meaningfully to ongoing projects, and explore the biological questions I am most passionate about.

Research Interests/Projects: I am currently studying the role of MED12 in regulating stem-cell properties in colorectal cancer (CRC) and whether it acts through transcriptional condensate mechanisms similar to the broader Mediator complex. I am exploring the possibility that MED12, as part of the CDK8 module, influences the formation or composition of phase-separated condensates at super-enhancers to control stemness- and EMT-related gene expression.

Fun Facts and Interests: I am deeply passionate about women’s health and health policy, with a strong commitment to advancing equity in care and reducing disparities in women’s healthcare. My interest in this field deepened during a missionary trip with the Africa Relief Organization, where I assisted in providing essential healthcare services to women and children in underserved areas of Tanzania and Ghana. Witnessing firsthand the limited resources and the quality of care available to women in these communities was eye-opening, and it reinforced my dedication to advocating for policies and initiatives that address these inequities and improve access to quality healthcare for women worldwide.

Outside of academics and research, I am a competitive fencer who has competed nationally and internationally, representing the United States at World Cups and World Championships several times. I am a nine-time national champion, a bronze medalist at the World Championships, and a gold and silver medalist at World Cups. Beyond athletics, I am an avid pianist with 11 years of experience, competing at national and international competitions, placing gold and silver many times, which granted me the opportunity to perform at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall nine times. I also love exploring new places and have traveled to 17 countries, always seeking experiences that broaden my perspective and deepen my commitment to service.
